Lauren Ridloff: Breaking the barriers of disability and identity in Hollywood

This week as part of Hispanic Heritage Month we highlight Lauren Ridloff. Fans of superhero movies recognize Lauren as Makkari, a deaf superhero in the Marvel movie Eternals (Eternals 2021).

Lauren, née Teruel, was born on April 6, 1978, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Lauren was born deaf to hearing parents, her father is Mexican American and her mother African American. Lauren earned a bachelor's degree in English with an emphasis in creative writing from California State University, Northridge, and a master's degree in education from Hunter College, New York. Lauren worked as a kindergarten teacher prior to her professional acting debut.

Lauren's acting work includes Fatima in the movie, If You Could Hear My Own Tune (2011); Pearl, the maid in the mystery drama film Wonderstruck (2017); Sarah Norman in Children of a Lesser God (2018) in the Berkshire Theater Group production of the play and earning a nomination for a Tony Award for Best Actress. In 2018, Lauren appeared in the ninth season of the television series The Walking Dead, playing the role of Connie. In 2019 she played Diane in the acclaimed Oscar-nominated film, The Sound of Metal and recently appeared in the role of Makkari in the Marvel film Eternals (2021).

Before entering the world of entertainment, she was crowned Miss Deaf America of the National Association of the Deaf. Lauren is married and has two children (both deaf).

On the intersectionality of her disability and identity Lauren tells us, “It is OK to feel different about my identities. It all depends on context: Where I’m at; what I’m going through; my experience as a Deaf person, as a Black person, and as a Mexican person. It’s just a part of who I am. It’s an intersection. It all comes together. One identity color another identity.”
